Alarmist Predictions

Bed, Bath & Glow in the Dark

Bed, Bath & Beyond, the US retailer, joined the ForestEthics campaign against Albertan oil in 2010 allegedly over its concern for the planet:

“Today’s announcement ends the Tar Sands industry’s hallucination that consumers have no choice but to blindly purchase their fuel, even with its nightmare environmental price tag,” said ForestEthics Executive Director Todd Paglia. “Whole Foods and Bed, Bath and Beyond have confirmed that Canada’s dirty Tar Sands oil represents a brand risk too great to ignore.

You know what else represents a brand risk too great to ignore? Selling radioactive tissue holders, that’s what:

Metal tissue holders contaminated with low levels of radioactive material may have been distributed to Bed, Bath & Beyond stores in more than 20 states including New York, federal regulators said Thursday.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman David McIntyre said the home products company had pulled the tissue holder from its stores. He said there is little to no risk to human health — but it’s better to avoid unnecessary exposure to radiation.

A note to Bed, Bath & Beyond customers, perhaps it’s better to avoid unnecessary exposure to enviro-poseur firms who accidentally irradiate you.

Just sayin’.

    His email adress is
    ****

Got it, thanks peterj, if he accepts the offer, you’ll see it here.

I redacted his email from your comment only because no one few people deserve that much spam from a harvested addy on a blog.

  • peterj,
    Thanks for sharing that.

BB&B are still listed on the ForestEthics site as a participant in their campaign.

If you forward Mr. Dyers email address to me, I’ll offer him the opportunity to rebut ForestEthics claim directly on this site. If BB&B has been hijacked by ForestEthics to the anti-oilsands cause without permission, he can say so, unedited, right here.

I sent Bed/bath a email stating my wife (and several friends) would no longer shp there and got this reply.

Dear Mr. J****** my name is Greg Dyer and I oversee Bed Bath and Beyond operations in Canada. I apologize for not getting back to you earlier, I just landed in Toronto.
Bed Bath and Beyond has no opinion on the Alberta Oil Sands. Any suggestion that we do by the media or Lobby Groups is incorrect. Unfortunately the media has never asked me or our company if we have any kind of stance on the Alberta Oil Sands. Back in early 2010, the Lobby Group Forest Ethics linked us with their stance on the fuels derived from the Alberta Oil Sands. A little time after that the CEO of U.S. Grocery Chain Whole Foods announced he was banning the use of fuels derived from the Alberta Oil Sands in his fleet of trucks. After that, every time Forest Ethics and or Whole Foods spoke out against the Oil Sands it was linked to us. We attempted to clarify we were not associated with either and they did not speak for us. We believe we should focus on retail and have no right or expertise to comment on the Alberta Oil Sands. I previously lived in Alberta, my wife is from Alberta and both my children were born in Alberta. Most of my family and closest friends live and work in Alberta with many of them working in the Oil and Gas Industry. Its positive economic impact is one of the primary reasons Alberta is a great place to do business. I/ we would like to see the Alberta economy continue to prosper.
Thank you for taking the time to express your concern! Please be assured we do not have and never have had any kind of boycott of the Alberta Oil Sands and the fuels derived from them.

    Sincerely,
    Greg Dyer
    Senior Vice President
    Bed Bath and Beyond Canada

Any retailer that picks politically correct activist driven sides is,…how shall I put this,…..stupid. As Chiquita bananas learned. What may seem like a good idea today could bite you in the ass tomorrow. Even dumber is the fact that it’s completely illogical as a business model. Why pick sides when you can sell to all ? The vast majority shop on price, quality and selection. Shows that for many CEO’s a good education has no bearing on intelligence or common sense. Hope they go broke.

  • As our sole supplier of goods is China, we would far rather this cheap and reasonably clean source go to them so they can provide further reductions to their manufacturing costs. That way we can pass the savings on to you.
