Waxman-Markey Day

The debate is currently on, the Democrats have just refused to allow any more time for debate, despite three requests from the Rep. Sessions of the Republicans.

If you want to watch the train wreck in real time, go to C-SPAN here.

Sessions is currently tearing the Dems a new one.

I’ll update this post throughout the day as time allows.  Twitter users should follow #capandtax

UPDATES

9.43EST: Rep. Jim McGovern (D) just claimed that sea level rise has affected some island nations in the world.  Riiiiiiight.

9.46EST: Rep. Joe Barton (R) is incredulous at the short time for debate, and at the extra 400 pages inserted overnight.

9.47EST: Barton wants to vote no on the rule and return to debate the bill in the fall

9.51EST: Rep. Upton (R): This bill will turn the lights off in America

9.55EST: Rep. Kathy Castor has just invented something called carbon pollution.

9.57EST: Castor thinks Florida will be flooded by rising seas.  How dumb can she be?

10.04EST: Rep. Mike Pence: Dems filed a 30o page amendment at 3am, allowed no time to read it.  What’s the hurry?

10.10EST: Rep. Paul Broun (R): It’s a hoax, the greatest scientific fraud of our times. (to applause)

10.21EST: Rep. Mike Quigley: Global warming is real, not a hoax (to no applause)

10.27EST: Rep. Phil Roe (R) : we should have a level playing field with China and India.

10.29EST: Rep David Dreier (R): Everyone knows this is huge tax

10.31EST: Rep Matsui (D) has 4 minutes to wrap up on the rule debate

10.33EST: Rep. Matsui “if we do not act we face disastrous consequences”

10.38EST: Voting on the resolution, full debate is next.  I think.

11.34EST:  House on other business right now, the 3 hour debate is soon.

12.16EST: Democrats are stalling the start of the debate on Waxman-Markey with requests for recorded votes on the Interior Dept. Spending matter.  Perhaps they realize they are short of votes?  This is going to be a close vote, if we ever get to it.

12.45EST: It’s on.  Waxman just introduced the Bill, the debate will be under way soon.

12.48EST: Waxman claims broad support for the Bill, including ‘leading environmental groups’.  That’s news to Greenpeace.

12.52EST: Frank Lucas (R) made his opening speech, ‘this is the wrong bill at the wrong time for the wrong reasons’

12.56EST: Rep. Markey is speaking in support of the bill, ‘the consequences for our country are great unless we deal with these issues’.  Someone tell him that the consequences for the country of passing the bill are even worse.

13.01: Rep. Goodlatte (R): This bill does nothing to promote nuclear power, the least CO2 emitting  power

13.05: Rep. Boucher (D): EPA says coal use will grow under cap and trade.  Huh?
