Paramount and Hasbro are Excited to bring yet another “G.I. Joe” spinoff film.
As per the reports of one of The Hollywood Reporter, the film is in the early stages of planning.
It is being described as an “ensemble piece” and might feature the character of Chuckles,
who is quite popular for his undercover and infiltration work.
The news comes from Variety, whose sources report Paramount is working to find a new direction for the G.I.
Joe franchise. Snake Eyes previously appeared in 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, where he was played by Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode I). As with last year’s Transformers prequel Bumblebee, Paramount looks to be shifting focus to smaller, character-driven spin-offs of its Hasbro properties.
Snake Eyes was previously portrayed by actor Ray Park in two films — “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” and “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”.
The released date for this film was recently moved from March 27, 2020, to October 16, 2020.
Paramount is developing a new G.I. Joe spin-off movie centered around Snake Eyes, and
Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding is reportedly in early talks to play the titular ninja character.
It’s unknown whether Snake Eyes will be connected to the previous G.I. Joe’s films or tell a completely standalone story.
Golding’s casting (assuming talks pan out) suggests fans will see more of the man beneath the ninja mask.
Snake Eyes will be directed by Robert Schwentke (RED) and is written by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast).
The film is said to be an origin story focused on a young Snake Eyes’ efforts to join the Arashikage Clan, which implies
his rivalry with Storm Shadow will factor heavily into the plot.
Paramount Pictures and Hasbro began developing their own cinematic universe that was based on Hasbro properties in spring 2016.
In addition to G.I. Joe, this shared universe includes Micronauts, Visionaries, M.A.S.K. (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand) and ROM.
