Methods to Keep Your Macbook in Top Shape

Macbooks are durable, and they are going to last for years. Nevertheless, there will come a time when you notice that the overall performance has dropped. In some instances, the feeling of sluggishness becomes too much, and you can hardly do anything with the Mac.

Creating a maintenance routine for the computer will prolong the lifespan of the Macbook. And if you have no idea where to start, the methods below are a good reference. And keep in mind that you should do everything regularly.

Method #1 – Use Cleanup Software

Cleanup software like cleanmymac x is great to remove various junk files from the computer. Caches, old backups and system update data, app plugins, and other temporary storage does not take a lot of disk space. However, there are a lot of these files, and the sheer number slows down the computer.

There is an option to remove them manually, but that would require some tinkering with the system settings and backing up folders. There is a possibility that you will delete something important by accident. Thus, it would be better and simpler to use a cleanup utility tool.

Method #2 – Free up Disk Space

Macbook disks are not that large, to begin with. People who have switched from PCs will tell you that it takes time to get used to the change. But there are some neat tricks that will free up disk space.

  • Delete old applications and reinstall later in case you need to use them.
  • Transfer files to clouds like Dropbox or iCloud.
  • Remove old email attachments and downloads.
  • Subscribe to streaming platforms and do not bother with large media files.
  • Purchase external storage devices.

Method #3 – Look at Activity Monitor

You can sort applications by memory and CPU usage in the Activity Monitor. And while there will be processes that cannot be removed from the Mac, you can still make some adjustments and save resource usage.

For instance, there are bound to be some applications that are running in the background without any purpose. Shut them down and remove any from the startup menu, so they do not launch every time you start the computer.

Another example is looking for alternatives to applications that you already use. Though it will take some time to try a lot of variations until you find something that consumes fewer resources and is still as good as the current apps.

Method #4 – Scan for Malware

Scan for Malware

Device security is emphasized a lot these days. Given how many cybersecurity threats are out there, everyone should invest more in protecting themselves from any viruses or malware.

A reliable anti-malware tool is enough most of the time, even if it is running in the background and detecting any threats. However, you should initiate active scans regularly as well. It takes a bit to scan the system, but you will have peace of mind knowing that everything is in order.

Method #5 – Optimize Browser

Extensive use of a browser will also lead to performance issues. And these issues are not related to the ISP provider.

A number of users take things a bit too far by adding too many extensions and add-ons. The browser becomes sluggish. It would be better to remove any extensions that are unnecessary.

As for other ways to boost the performance of your browser, clearing caches and browsing history also helps. As does keeping the number of open tabs to a minimum since even when idle, a tab is still consuming the system’s resources.

Method #6 – Prevent Memory Leaks

When programs run for a long time, they start to distribute the memory wrongly. It is not a good sign for the system, though the issue is not that big and can be solved by restarting the computer.

Usually, a few restarts throughout the day should do the job, unless you are using the Macbook for a long time. Whenever you feel like the computer has slowed down, press the restart button.

Method #7 – Update the System

New system updates should be one of your priorities. Each new version of the macOS comes with improvements to the overall performance, security, and it introduces new features.

While most updates take care of themselves automatically, you should still check now and then to make sure that the system is up to date.

Method #8 – Declutter Desktop

 Declutter Desktop

Putting every file on the desktop might seem like a useful thing, but this kind of cluttering is not good for the Macbook or any computer.

Some people have a habit of keeping their data on the desktop, but they fail to realize how much of a toll it puts on the system. Switching between the desktop and another window renders every icon. Think about how often you switch tabs when using the Mac daily.

Instead of having a cluttered desktop, look to organize the files and transfer them to another location.
