Although summertime is usually filled with big-budget blockbusters, this movie season highlighted great drama films. One such was, Rocketman biographical story of musician Elton John, that even generated some Oscar buzz for Taron Egerton’s performance in the starring role. Two films that were praised by critics and put minority actors and stories in the spotlight were The Farewell and The Last Black Man in San Francisco. This season’s best genre was easy horror. With releases such as Child’s Play and Annabelle Comes Home, both revolved around creepy dolls and both film series had the former being a reboot while the latter being a sequel, they certainly let chills down our spine. Speaking of horror though, the best one this Summer is easily Ma, starring Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer.

Everyone loves a movie that can make them laugh until they fall out of their seats and this season’s contender guaranteed exactly that. One that stuck closely to our hearts was Isn’t It Romantic starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam DeVine, and Priyanka Chopra. With Wilson’s comedic energy, it was bound to be a hit. Coming to the downside, Olivia Wilde’s feature directorial debut, Booksmart thought expected to perform well in the box office actually did the opposite and was outshined by big-budget films.
Blast from the past
Disney released a total of three films this summer of which included The Lion King, Aladdin and Toy Story 4 which collectively grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. Although the first two broke box office records in days that they hit theatres, many moviegoers rendered Toy Story 4 as an unnecessary addition to the perfect ending of its predecessor.
