As the release of Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix looms, the character’s colorful ex is reclaiming the narrative. The first trailer for Birds of Prey, which follows the villainous Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) as she ditches the Joker and assembles a Gotham girl gang, dropped today.
Margot Robbie has really unearthed another aspect to Harley Quinn, and it’s all coming out in Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. The coming film got its initial full-length trailer nowadays, and it is, for lack of a better word, intense. This is one lady gang you do not wish to mess with.
In the opening minutes, Robbie’s antihero ruminates on the definition of a harlequin. She laments that her role is to serve and that she’s nothing without a master.
However, her requisite post-breakup routine drinking your feelings, getting an ill-advised chop to cease when she realizes her misery has company. “The Joker and that I stony-broke up I needed an opportunity,” she says. “But it seems I wasn’t the sole dame in Gotham searching for release.”
Subtitled the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, the movie sees HQ unite with a squad of female forces including Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Rosie Perez as a Gotham City cop. Other actors set to make appearances include Ewan McGregor, Ali Wong, and Chris Messina.
Although Quinn at one point suggests ordering pizza and making cosmos with her new crew, one gets the feeling there won’t be much downtime
. After all, they team up to save a young girl from an evil crime boss in Gotham, with Robbie reprising her role from 2016’s Suicide Squad. She’ll wield her mallet once for the Suicide Squad sequel in 2021. Birds of Prey hits theatres on Feb seven, 2020.
